Why Your Marketing Efforts Aren't Yielding Results—and What You Can Do About It

Most small businesses under $5M in revenue have this one thing in common when it comes to marketing their business: they lack a clear, consistent digital marketing strategy that effectively targets and converts their ideal audience.
They are confused and baffled when it comes to what, where and how to spend their marketing time and money.
They aren’t the only ones, there are much larger businesses that find themselves in the same position.
Recently, I came across a Linkedin post from a woman who posted a recent situation of hers. She had applied to a C-Level Marketing position.
She kept hearing the same thing:
🗣 "We need to fix our paid ads."
🗣 "Our Facebook ads aren't driving enough return."
🗣 "We want this role to increase revenue by 40% by EOY"
She did the smart thing and removed herself from consideration.
Why?
As she said, they didn’t need a marketing executive, they needed a magician.
Paid ads won't make up for having:
❌ No overall strategy
❌ Low-quality photos and videos
❌ Poor positioning
❌ Lack of branding
❌ Bad copy
❌ Terrible user-experience
This has been an ongoing problem with so many businesses.
They think a marketer is a magician.
There have been many times in my own career I’ve come across so many that just asked me to “call up Google and get us ranked”.
No, that doesn’t work. There’s no one you call to get yourself ranked.
It takes a team, it takes an expert strategist to know your business, and go through all the data to determine the overall strategy which should be your first step.
Once you have the strategy, which was created as a result of understanding more about your audience or ideal client types, your content and messaging, your overall positioning in the marketplace.
What your “user experience” looks like - only then, will you be in a position to speak to that executive marketing person to help you get things “on track”.
Now, not every small business generating less than $5M annually needs a CMO.
What they do need though, is a strategic marketing plan.
And a digital marketing strategy is....
🤬 Not a list of keywords.
🤬 Not 50 backlinks to their website
🤬 Not another Wordpress “SEO” plugin
How Do You Acquire the Right Marketing Help?
Glad you asked!
It is not easy! I know that, because I’ve had so many conversations with hundreds of business owners who have…
🤷♀️ Spent some amount of money with a marketing freelancer or agency only to get 0 in return.
🤷♀️ Tried searching on YouTube for “how to do marketing for small businesses”
As a business owner, especially those just getting started, your primary role is to get consistent revenue.
You need to own sales, but marketing needs to work with that sales machine.
The point of marketing is to get the word out about who you are and what your company does.
But how?
I won’t use this space to go into a curriculum on what a digital marketing program should look like, instead, I’ll offer you some constructive direction on how to at least move into the right direction.
First, you do need to have a marketing plan or strategy.
You need to have answers to these questions:
- What is your goal right now?
- Why is that important to you?
- Who is your ideal client?
- What have you tried so far to accomplish this?
- How long did you do that for? How long ago was that?
- What was the result of that effort?
- How did it work? IF it did not, why not?
- What do you think needs to happen to change your situation?
- What kind of support do you think you need the most?
- What would be the most valuable to you over the next 90 days?
If you can honestly answer each of those questions, you’ll be much further ahead than many of your competitors.
You might also gain a lot of clarity by considering each of those questions.
I ask those questions often, and depending on the answers I offer to help.
If you found yourself reflecting deeply on these questions and realized there's room for improvement in your marketing strategy, you're not alone.
